Although global food production of calories has kept pace with population growth, more than 820 million people have insufficient food and The controversial EAT-Lancet Commission, which advocates a plant-based diet to promote better human and planetary health, hit a bump recently when the World Health Organization (WHO) backed out of one of the commission’s high-profile public events.
The launch of the report was paralleled by several international launch events, including a social media campaign with its own hashtag: # The EAT-Lancet recommendations encourage a largely plant-based diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, pulses and plant oils, with very modest amounts of animal protein – and in particular, it encourages a reduction in red meat (amounting to a small portion no more than 2-3 times a month). The EAT–Lancet reference diet is often unaffordable for the poor because it requires larger quantities of higher-cost food groups such as dairy, eggs, meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables than the near-subsistence diets that are consumed by very poor people. The planetary health diet is a flexitarian diet created by the EAT-Lancet commission as part of a report released in The Lancet on 16 January 2019. The aim of the report and the diet it developed is to create dietary paradigms that have the following aims: The EAT-Lancet Commission’s report, which was launched in January 2019, demonstrates why diet and food production must radically change to improve health and avoid potentially catastrophic damage to the planet.
